West Virginia University Balloon Satellite Project

The Team

I was part of a 2005 WVU student team that designed, built, launched, tracked, and recovered small electronics payloads, using helium-filled weather balloons that was used to send their payloads into and beyond the stratosphere. Global positioning (GPS) tracking was used to track the satellite's travel path and to ultimately find and recover the satellite upon return to earth's surface. Altitude was also measured using the GPS.
